From the Values Academy
Two independent special schools are run by Values Academy, one in Nuneaton and one in Birmingham.
It is a corporation limited by guarantee and an independent charity (number 1131991) that offers young people aged 11 to 19 who are at risk of social exclusion due to a co-morbidity of disorders or social, emotional, and behavioural challenges an alternative to conventional schooling.
We have committees and meetings to support this at school, and all of our students and staff strive to uphold these ideals in our daily activities.
At Values Academy, we strive to make a child's education centred on their emotional and mental well-being.
In addition to receiving regular training in the area of mental health and wellness, our team is encouraged to reflect on their work.
Values Academy operates two schools with a fundamentally values-based attitude that prioritises the needs of its students in all that it does.
Saying that there is a crisis in young people's mental health both locally and nationally is not an exaggeration.
We are creating a "Whole School Approach" to Mental Health and Wellbeing at Values Academy because we recognise that in order for kids to learn effectively, their mental health must be a top priority. This approach will include assistance for students, their families, and our staff.
In order to help us improve our therapeutic thinking and our therapeutic curriculum, we hired Rachel Feaver last year. She is a psychodynamic therapist with experience working in SEMH schools and children's residential settings.
We are launching the process with "DDP level 1" training for our school therapeutic leads, new positions designed to support and promote therapeutic thinking at Values Academy. In our two schools, we have fully committed to these endeavours.
The goal of DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy), an attachment-focused therapy, is to strengthen the bond between traumatised children and their carers, which in a school environment includes teachers and mentors.
The therapeutic curriculum, which you can access under the "information" page, already shows the impact of our effort in this area, which I hope you will see and feel.
Please let our School Leaders know if you would like to visit us in Birmingham or Nuneaton to tour the schools and meet some of our staff. We always welcome referrers, parents, and students to come and take a look around by previous appointment.
If you have kids in mind who would profit from our one-to-one community-based education in a great atmosphere with better mental health and therapeutic assistance and reliable educational outcomes, we would be glad to hear from you.
