The will of Thomas Tiffin, dated May 15, 1638, which gave 50 in trust to the Bailiffs and Freemen of Kingston for the purchase of land and/or buildings, the money from which would be used to instruct "any honest poor man's son," is the earliest known reference to the school.
Born in Yalding, Kent, Thomas Tiffin and his brother John were prosperous Kingston brewers.
He diligently acquired land and property in Kingston's current High Street and Fairfield neighbourhood so that by 1641, money was being used to pay for a number of students' annual expenses for clothes and education. (William Cleave bequeathed funds in his will upon his passing in 1667 for the establishment of two schools in Yalding, Kent, and Woodchurch, Cheshire, as well as for the construction of the Almshouses in Old London Road.)
The first Tiffin School was able to be built on the Fairfield thanks to the Endowed Schools Act of 1869, which also authorised the consolidation of the several educational charities in Kingston. (The structure is still in use as St. Joseph's RC Primary School, and Fairfield is still a portion of the Tiffin School's endowed land.)
Under the leadership of Headmaster C J Grist, the school began classes on January 20, 1880.
After the First World War, a location in London Road, Elmfield, was chosen as having enough room, and the Main Building, a new classroom building, was built there. (Elmfield is a Georgian townhouse that is Grade II listed.) In September 1929, the school moved to its current location.
The school became an academy on July 1, 2011.
Only eight head teachers have led the school since 1880, which is a record for a public school.
