The condition of the numerous impoverished families who lived in Exeter's West Quarter troubled the Reverend John Gilberd Pearse, Rector of All Hallows-on-the-Wall Church, more and more.
In 1866, he established the Community of St. Wilfrid's, a nunnery affiliated with the Church of England.
The school quickly flourished and gained a reputation for having a serious atmosphere and tight rules.
Since 1866, the Sisters of St. Wilfrid's had operated an orphanage at St. David's Hill.
St. Wilfrid's became Exeter's first independent co-educational school under the able guidance of Reverend Mother Edith, the final Sister to hold the position of teaching headmistress.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, St. Wilfrid's students were frequently spotted in the city delivering food baskets to elderly people living in nearby almshouses and singing Christmas carols in the High Street. For many years, traffic was stopped as students made their way to Exeter Cathedral for the annual St. Wilfrid's Day service each October.
Due to the growing demands of the curriculum, the ageing Sisters—no new members had entered the Order since the 1950s—decided in 1988 that they could no longer manage St. Wilfrid's School.
While the Junior division remained under the direction of the Sisters, the Senior division was transformed into an independent institution with its own headteacher and financial management.
Fortunately, the Junior School was welcomed to reunite with the seniors in 1994 because the Junior School's separation from the Senior School was only temporary.
Students travelled 125 miles in 1995 to celebrate the school's 125th anniversary. Senior students used a combination of bicycles, horses, sailboats, canoes, and walking to complete the journey.
and the burying of a time capsule including school artefacts.
Mrs. Alexandra MacDonald-Dent retired as head teacher after 20 years in that position.
Ross Bovingdon, a former student, has been named the new headteacher.
Today, St. Wilfrid's School is ecstatic about its history and the significant part it has played in Exeter's community. It now anticipates many more profitable years in the centre of the city.
