We at St. Chad's hope to arouse interest in history and a passion for learning. Children get a feeling of their own identity as well as that of others through expanding their knowledge and comprehension of Britain's history and the wider globe. By encouraging historical inquiry and interpretation, we assist kids in developing their critical thinking skills. By offering possibilities for writing, acting, art, and the use of top-notch non-fiction literature in our studies, we encourage cross-curricular connections. Furthermore, we think it's crucial for kids to make connections between history and themselves and their neighbourhood. In Year 3 and 4, children complete a history walk around their local area and in the nearby town of Thornbury, while Year 1 and 2 visit the SS Great Britain in the heart of Bristol and the Bristol Aerospace Museum in Filton. By planning excursions, such as trips to the Natural History Museum in London, Stonehenge, and the Caerleon Roman Museum, we further improve our history curriculum. In addition, we employ tourists and artefacts to "bring history to life." For instance, during the study of toys, grandparents are brought to the school to speak about their memories of their own childhoods. In Year 1 and 2, students also participate in a theatrical recreation of the Great Fire of London. We hope to instil in the children a strong feeling of democracy and an understanding of their place in a global society by teaching them about ancient civilizations like the Greeks and the Romans. In order to help children become lifelong learners in a society that is becoming more and more technologically advanced, we feel that teaching them about history will provide them a solid foundational understanding of origins and culture.
