From the Shade Primary School
Shade Primary School is a one-form entrance school located in the centre of Todmorden, its neighbourhood.
The school is located close to Todmorden's downtown in the sleepy neighbourhood of Shade.
When the school was constructed in 1904, it was a dazzling example of the most modern educational concepts, with features like open-air stairs and a swimming pool.
The region was given its name in honour of the "wood-shade" that was built as part of the engineering work to bring the Rochdale Canal through Todmorden when the "Great Wall of Todmorden" was being built.
The school is surrounded by a lot of historical sites.
Todmorden was a bustling centre of business and industry a century ago, with houses and mills all over the place.
Plans for a new school in Shade were created by the Todmorden School Board as early as 1902.
Visitors to Todmorden today seek out historic or picturesque sights or opt to stroll among the heather on the peaceful moors. Todmorden still has a large number of small enterprises and a healthy market.
