One of the oldest schools in the nation is the School.
Although the actual date of establishment is unknown, we do know that a Chantry School was already operational at the former castle of Hanley in 1326.
Hanley reemerged as a Grammar School during the Reformation, and we have a charter dating from 1544, under the reign of Henry VIII.
The school's facilities were greatly enhanced by the building programme in 1991, and as a result of becoming a Specialist School for Languages, we were able to acquire funds for a spectacular new $2 million, eight-classroom language block, which was inaugurated in September 2008.
Hanley Parish, which eventually evolved into Hanley Castle, has a lengthy and fascinating history.
In order to honour the long history of our special community, we have named our new institutions after three significant villages found within the forest.
Burley University.
When King John constructed a castle in the parish at the start of the 13th century, Hanley's reputation was enhanced.
Even though it served more as a hunting lodge than a castle during its 300-year existence.
Anglo-Saxon burh leah, which means "clearing near a fort," was the name of the settlement that once stood on the high land where the castle was eventually built.
Horton University.
Hanley's pottery industry flourished as a result of the area's abundant supply of clay and trees for making charcoal.
From the 12th through the 17th century, this persisted, mainly around Roberts End, where hundreds of pieces of mediaeval pottery have just recently been found.
So let our kids compete at the colleges they represent for honour and glory!
All of our pupils are urged to recognise their place in the global society and the need of exhibiting respect and tolerance for other people's cultures and ethnicities.
The curriculum emphasises global issues, and all academic disciplines play a crucial role in fostering a global mindset.
Students are reminded via trilingual signage placed throughout the school that they attend a school that welcomes its European neighbours.
The school offers a diverse schedule of foreign connections, visits, and exchanges.
This includes an annual visit by a Chinese tutoring group, who are invited to spend the summer at our school.
For former students of the school who still desire to stay in touch with one another, there is an association.
We still have former students from the 1930s who wish to indulge their nostalgia since our institution is historically significant.
The Association's President is the Headteacher, and an association member serves on the school's governing body.
