Children at Downs View who have profound or multiple learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities alone, or severe learning challenges combined with autism get specialised instruction.
The students at our Downs View Woodingdean location range in age from 4 to 16 years old, while those at our Downs View Link College, which we recently amalgamated with the Cedar Centre and are now known as Downs View Hollingdean, range in age from 16 to 19.
We recognise that our very special children have individual educational needs and that success in education is strongly affected, not only by our activities but by their lives with their parents and carers.
Due to our focus on communication and interaction—two crucial skills for any young child to be able to grow and learn in their community—we asked for and were granted Specialist Schools Status.
The behaviour support strategy is promoted by all staff members and is based on an understanding of both the child or young person's specific needs and the requirements of other students.
We teach all kids and adults to be considerate of other people's needs and feelings and to respect people of all faiths and cultures.
We hope in reading this you will understand that we believe that, for these unique children and young people, a holistic approach is needed to ensure best outcomes for the children and young people.
We have a wide variety of professionals and therapists associated with the organisation who work in the classrooms and with key staff, so that individual requirements are incorporated into the educational programme and key targets.
Our work is supported on-site by a variety of therapists (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, music therapists, and other specialists) (CAMHS, school nurses, paediatricians).
We collaborate closely with The Seaside View Child Development Center, Adult Social Care, and social workers who come to our facility to review a child's situation. These reviews may include updating a statement of special education needs, providing respite care or outreach services, establishing "Shared Lives," or transferring a child to adult services, among other things.
Brighton and Hove City is lucky to have a number of disability-focused organisations that, for instance, collaborate closely with AMAZE and the Parent Carer Council.
