From the The Complete Works Independent School
In 1999, Phil Richards established The Complete Works as a "Theatre in Education" organisation and started putting on educational plays, art projects, and seminars in public schools.
A particularly difficult-to-engage young person who was refusing to attend school was asked if Phil could find a way to teach him to read during the first year the company was in business.
As the business grew, we established a solid educational infrastructure and applied to be an exam centre so that students could take their GCSE exams there.
We requested independent school status from the Department of Education in 2013 because we wanted Ofsted to evaluate the calibre of our work.
Our experience working with young people who have lost interest in traditional schooling has taught us that reinvigorating an interest in learning cannot be done by simply reintroducing the failed model.
Our method of teaching involves first creating a secure space where children feel supported, then encouraging their creativity and providing them with opportunity to learn more.
Each student is taken into account on an individual basis, and a custom educational programme is created to satisfy his or her unique demands.
Although the term "theatre" is no longer in the company name, our goal has always been to "improve education via artistic means," and creativity is always at the heart of the work we do with all of our students.
Since the company's founding, we have helped thousands of young people re-engage with education, learn creatively, and succeed academically both within and outside the classroom setting.
The group continues to tour plays and present creative projects to other schools in London and the surrounding areas in addition to running our Independent School.
