From the Mayville High School
Mayville has been at the heart of Southsea life since 1897 and, to this day, we continue to follow our founding philosophy of educating the 'whole child' – 'the head, the hand and the heart'. Our ethos serves to instil a life-long love of learning in every pupil. Throughout our Nursery, Junior, Senior & Wyvern House (our specialist learning support and wellbeing centre), studies and activities are inclusive and structured to meet the needs, challenge the expectations and exceed the goals of each individual.
Mayville High School has been providing exceptional education for over 125 years in Hampshire and is considered a leading provider in SEN support within the independent school sector. To that end, in September 2023 Mayville opened Wyvern House which has 25 places for pupils who have neurodiverse needs and for whom mainstream school isn't appropriate. At the heart of this provision is a multi-disciplinary team, which includes specialist SEN teachers and TAs, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, a mental health counsellor and even an onsite therapy dog! Learning experiences are delivered in line with the child's EHCP. Placements in Wyvern are either funded by LEAs or by parents.

Mayville High School Reviews

We have two daughters at Mayville High School and we have been absolutely delighted with the nurture and support they receive. One of our children in particular has required a significant amount of support and we are astonished at the progress she has made both academically and socially. Both girls have hugely benefitted from being part of the Mayville family where we feel staff in the nursery and junior school have gone beyond expectations to...
All 5 of our grandchildren have attended Mayville High School. The school provides an excellent, all round education which all of our grandchildren have thrived from. Our eldest granddaughter’s dance career was well supported through the creative arts team, supporting her through her time on the West End. The other four children are very sporty. The school provides an excellent PE curriculum, covering a wide range of sports and activities. Our grandsons particularly enjoy ‘sports...
We moved our youngest to Mayville because he wasn't being pushed hard enough or supported with the transition to secondary school in his previous school. He had been unhappy in a very large school with behaviour issues and unkind behaviour. After his taster day at Mayville he couldn't believe how kind everyone was. Moving him to Mayville was transformational. It was like we got our boy back. He had become quiet and reserved and unhappy...
Mayville High School is the perfect school for our daughter. She is so happy to attend school, with wonderful friendships made. She regularly recounts to us her school day and the fantastic experiences that she has had. She is making great progress with her academic studies, with individual support given to ensure that she is able to achieve. Her academic studies are interspersed with an excellent provision of additional opportunities, helping her to develop as...
We moved our son to Mayville during Year 7 and it was like we had our son back. He had been really unhappy in his previous school and his first comment was he couldn't believe how kind everyone was. As soon as he did a taster day he didn't want to go back. The teaching is excellent and teachers bend over backwards to make sure he is stretched and makes progress. The pastoral support has...
As a parent, all I hope and wish for my two daughters is that they are safe and that academically they feel inspired to learn about the world around them. At the heart of Mayville is an ethos that drew me to them at the outset which is an approach to learning that is outstanding in its delivery whilst also providing robust support. My daughters are motivated to push themselves and feel confident asking for...
Mayville High School has provided a place in which both my daughters thrive. As a parent, all I can hope is that they are safe and inspired to learn about the world around them. The teachers create an environment where they can question and seek clarification when they do not understand something. Learning happens when they return home through their excitement around telling me about the different topics they are learning. Socially, both daughters have...
All three of my children have been lucky enough to attend Mayville High School. Our eldest child was struggling to meet expectations in a local state school and the possibility of him having dyslexia was discussed. We then proceeded to have a private assessment which indeed did show that he was dyslexic. It was at this point we decided to move him to Mayville as the small classes and DLEU 1-1 lessons available really appealed...
