The school has been operating on this location since 1568 after receiving a Royal Charter in 1555.
Boston Grammar School is highlighted in this book's analysis of Boston's history.
Although the current Boston Grammar School dates from the sixteenth century, it is thought that Boston had a school in the fourteenth century.
The rift between Henry VIII and the Papacy is where our modern school got its start.
The actual document is a set of letters patent from Philip and Mary bequeathing land for "the finding, maintaining and establishing, for ever, a Free Grammar school in Boston, and a fit master to teach, instruct and serve in the said School for the Education and Instruction of Boys and Youth in Grammar."
A stained glass representation of Philip and Mary is prominently displayed in the school library.
The school appears to have remained in its original Wormgate location for twelve years before the 'new' schoolhouse, which is now the Library and the foundation of our current school, was built between 1567 and 1568.
The school honours this Royal Charter every autumn.
The majority of headmasters in the seventeenth century were Cambridge graduates, notably those who came from Emmanuel College, where Puritanism predominated at the time.
Despite a shift toward Oxford graduates under the restored Charles II, Cambridge nevertheless supplied the majority of the school's "ushers."
Boarding was prevalent until just after World War I, and at times the bulk of BGS teachers came from Boston's surrounding communities or further afield. Having witnessed nearly five centuries of history unfold around it and maintaining a prominent position in the social and cultural history of the town, BGS undoubtedly has a fascinating history.

The colour yellow
In his bequest, dated November 27, 1707, Boston resident and gentleman John Laughton bequeathed money for the school.
The vicar and the headmaster of the grammar school were left in charge of selecting the master.
In 1909, a scheme drawn up by the board of Education readjusted the uses of the money and applied it to help educate children of the Freeman of the Borough of Boston and for several other purposes.
The colour green
Thomas Parry left in 1875, money to pay the fees of five boys at the Grammar School.
He also founded the Parry Medal to be awarded to 'the Boy who being (except previus Medallists) in the Boston Grammar School'.
