From the Barking Abbey School, A Specialist Sports and Humanities College
As one of the first co-educational grammar schools in England, Barking Abbey was established in 1922. It was in a primarily rural area with nearby farms and fields at the time. Gradually, as Barking grew as a residential area, the school rose to prominence as the centre of the neighbourhood and a top-tier educational facility. Barking Abbey School: A Specialist Sports and Humanities College was created in 1970 by the union of Barking Abbey Grammar School and Park Modern School. Many of the old schools' traditions are still there, but there have been significant changes that have helped the school and its students better prepare for the opportunities and challenges of the twenty-first century. But one thing hasn't changed: We are a resounding success. Barking Abbey is a mixed-gender school with about 2,000 students. It often has a high rate of oversubscription, accepting 360 new students each year. The school draws its pupils from a large number of primary and junior schools particularly from the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge. With about 450 pupils, Barking Abbey's sixth form is quite large. Our 16 to 19-year-old students have access to a wide variety of AS, A2, and BTEC courses. The school is currently undergoing an expansion initiative that will increase the number of school forms of admission from nine to twelve. Our school is gradually transitioning to a twin campus format that will eventually house students in grades 7 through 11 on both of our campuses, Longbridge and Sandringham. The third year of this five-year expansion effort is currently underway.
