From the Windmill Primary School
Windmill Primary School welcomes and celebrates the diversity of not only our neighbourhood but also Northamptonshire and the nation as a whole. We are an entirely inclusive community school.
Through our dedication to student voice, class discussions about the school's shared expectations, holding assemblies that, while primarily Christian in nature, also welcomed visitors from other faiths and celebrated other religious and non-religious belief and ethical systems, as well as our efforts to promote tolerance and harmony between various groups of people, we have implicitly promoted and demonstrated fundamental British values over the years.
We are pleased to make clear these contents and procedures in accordance with recent guidance from the Department for Education.
The basic British principles of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and respect for people of all religions and beliefs are what we "promote."
We also acknowledge that these ideals are not unique to Britain and that they have grown there over a long period of time. Only by actively participating in democratic, lawful, and respectful institutions and processes—of which our primary school is one part—can these ideals be upheld and promoted.
Enable students to recognise right from wrong and respect England's civil and criminal justice systems to the proper degree for their age.
Ensure that students gain a thorough understanding of and respect for England's public institutions and services.
an awareness of the legal protections afforded to the ability to exercise one's religion and beliefs.
Utilizing the curriculum to highlight the evolution of democratic processes in Britain over time, as suitable for the students' age, and to contrast democracy in Britain with alternative systems of administration in other nations.
using educational materials from a wide range of sources, such as curricular study, visits from religious leaders, and, when possible, trips to places of worship, to aid students in understanding a diversity of faiths.
Parts in italics from the November 2014 document "Promoting core British values as part of SMSC in schools" have been used to support this position statement, which has been backed up by information from the Department of Education.
