From the Willingham Primary School
Willingham's first school was established in 1593 and paid for by taxation. The community had a boom in education in the 19th century, with the opening of the "Blinkhorn" private school in the 1850s, a day and boarding school in the now-demolished Newington House, and the first iteration of the current school in 1856. It was a board school with the name The British and Foreign Bible Societies School, afterwards abbreviated to The British School. It wasn't until the 1880s that girls were first taught in a gallery within the school. When the boys' and girls' schools merged in 1883, the separate girls' school was converted into the babies' school. The 1856 structure was sold and the current school was built in 1975. As money from its sale was invested and the Willingham British School's Trust is able to distribute grants for educational purposes, both to the school and across the hamlet generally, the old school continues to assist the current one.
