The 1899 year listed above Welton Primary School's main door is not the school's first year.
The school was initially mentioned in 1866, but at that time it was located at The Temperance Hall in Welton, not on Radstock Road.
The school's 74 students had exceeded its space by 1897, therefore construction on a new building on Radstock Road was planned.
With 66 students, the "Midsomer Norton Junior Mixed School" began on October 24th, 1899 at Radstock Road.
The school's name was changed to "Welton Council School No. 1" the following year.
Health was an issue during this time, and soon after the renaming, diphtheria forced the school to close for three weeks.
The school had 176 boys enrolled in 1931, but it lacked the big hall it has now.
When the girls from the High Street Council School reunited with Welton in 1947, the names of the two schools were reversed completely, and Welton was once more renamed "Welton Junior Mixed School."
The Infant Department will now be merged with it to create the "Welton County Primary School."
When the school got its first computer in 1984, there were only 74 students enrolled, the fewest since 1966.
This was the lowest point, and since then, the number has gradually risen.
For the reception year, a fourth class was introduced in 1989.
Mr. David Tilling started working as the new headteacher of the schools on January 1st, 1992.
There were 4 classes in the school at this time: Year 1 and Reception were in Class 1, Years 5 and 6 were in Class 2, Years 3 and 4 were in Class 3, and Years 1 and 2 were in Class 3.
The school expanded throughout the ensuing five years.
1995 saw 114 students while 1997 saw 121.
Restructuring was required.
The pupil explosion over the previous two years is depicted in the graph above.
There was a demand for more classes.
The new classroom addition for the Reception year opened in April 2000, and the ICT suite opened a month later.
Since then, the number of students has once more risen to above 180.
The ICT suite is no more with laptops and ipads used throughout the school.
