In the sixteenth century, Matthew Hutton, who was born in Warton, sought a career in the church.
Matthew Hutton established a trust in 1594 while serving as Bishop of Durham to fund a grammar school for the Warton community's youngsters.
The current school was constructed in 1971, but it keeps its name as a nod to more than 400 years of educational history in Warton.
The Latin phrase "Deo et bonis literis," which translates to "For God and sound learning," is the school's motto and embodies the principles of Matthew Hutton.
Charity is the Archbishop Hutton's Trust.
