From the Stover School
From humble beginnings as the Chestnut School in Newton Abbot in the late 1920s, Mrs. Joan Key created Stover School on its current location in 1932. (nee Dence).
The 64-acre site is the heart of Stover Park, the illustrious 18th-century estate of the Templer family. The XI Duke of Somerset purchased the estate in 1829, and the Seymour family owned it until its sale following World War I in 1921.
In 1956, the school was created an educational Trust and a business limited by guarantee thanks to the Key family's generosity.
Two members of the Key family are currently serving on the Board of Governors, demonstrating the family's ongoing commitment to the institution.
School Swimming at Stover Gala, 1944 The school served females aged 11 to 18 as both a day and residential school until 1994.
Since then, boys have gradually been included into the Senior School, resulting in today's almost entirely co-ed Preparatory School and Senior School.
The school has a longstanding reputation for distinction in the performing arts, including music and drama.
Since the school began admitting males, there have been more students, which has led to the building of other facilities.
