Since today is "Remembrance Day," we have been studying the significance of wearing poppies.
We produced clay poppies, wrote about Poppy Day, and discovered more about Miss Wilson's grandfather, a World War II soldier.
We examined artefacts like his uniform and awards.
We observed a two-minute period of silence during our assembly in honour of the wartime soldiers.
To learn more about working in the Victorian era, we visited Normanby Hall.
There were numerous historical artefacts available for viewing.
In Victorian times, people washed their garments using carbolic soap.
Before cleaning the iron with a spare piece of cloth, we would spit on it to test its temperature.
In addition to enjoying Bonfire Night, we have been studying the history of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.
Children have been studying how Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder through sequencing photographs of the "The Gunpowder Plot" story.
We also enjoyed creating a Guy Fawkes and splattering paint to depict fireworks in the night sky.
This past week was wonderful.
The kids were really excited to attend school dressed to the nines.
The youngsters marched joyfully into school as Mistress Perrin rang the school bell.
The youngsters had to give the teacher a penny to enter the classroom, but it was well worth it because it paid for their education.
The regulations of the school and the repercussions for breaking them were explained to the kids.
A cane or a cage would be placed in the headteacher's room for anyone who was truly misbehaving.
The youngsters started working on some Christmas crafts after practising the 3Rs (reading, writing, and math), but those projects are top secret until the Christmas Fayre.
The Battle of Hastings in 1066 is being narrated today using a paper replica of the Bayeux Tapestry.
We also used our own artwork to reconstruct some of the conflict.
Although utilising the internet and reading books can teach us a lot about the past, they are merely secondary sources of knowledge.
The best approach to learn about our past is to get up close and personal with antiques from that time period (Primary sources).
The kids looked at the textiles used to produce garments in the Victorian era and in the present as part of our visit to Normanby Hall.
A variety of clothes were provided for the kids to try on.
We examined a variety of sources of data, which provided us with a wealth of knowledge about the ancient Egyptians.
Can I investigate a significant historical event?
In their class assembly, Sunflower Class recounted the events surrounding The Great Fire of London.
Having such a sizable audience to present all of our historical work to was amazing.
We have looked into the various kinds of masks that the Classic Maya wore.
After that, we drew the ones we liked most or thought were most intriguing.
After this designed our own version of a Mask inspired by the features shown by the Ancient Maya.
Today we are putting our designs into reality.. Today we have celebrated Founder's day which marks the schools 289th birthday!
Happy Founder's Day".

CJ- 'We did The Great Fire of London phonics.
Linking to our English book and our learning about rocks we arranged for a geologist, Mr Evans, to come and talk to us about rocks, volcanoes & fossils.
He brought some of his collection of different types of rocks and fossils for the children to look at and handle.
The children really enjoyed this experience and had lots of questions for him.
He was very impressed and surprised by our knowledge of rocks and the questions that the children asked.
The children loved handling the fossils and the different types of rocks.
Mrs. Griffiths visited Sunflower Class and gave a very interesting and interactive talk about lots of different old toys and games.
She told the children how her Grandad and Dad used to make her toys out of wood when she was little.
She also demonstrated how toys could be made from paper, such as a fortune teller and a paper plane.
Mrs. Brady would like to thank Mrs. Griffiths for sharing all her wonderful toys and games.
They have been looking at these lovely old toys that Mrs. Brady's mum played with when she was little.
RJ- I think Sooty's head feels hard.
PR- The doll is called Rosie.
OB- Rosie's hair is not very soft like my new dolls.
The Sunflowers will be asking their parents and grandparents about the toys that they played with when they were little.
We would very much like to borrow any old photographs or old toys for our class Toy Museum!
.
Year 5 visited the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre as part of out history topic 'Local Area Study'.
We have been learning all about how Grimsby has changed in the past 100 years, particularly focusing on how fishing impacted the local area and how lifestyles have changed.
We had a fantastic time touring the museum taking us back to Grimsby in the early-mid 1900s, learning about how people lived, the role of trawlerman and other crew members and also how the local communities benefited from living in a busy fishing area.
