From the St Joseph's Catholic Primary School
The lone Catholic school in Dorking, St. Joseph's, was established in Falkland Grove by Minna, the Duchess of Norfolk, in 1873. Up until 1970, when the trustees of Powell Corderoy School were bought out, the school was housed on the property next to St. Joseph's Church. St. Joseph's stopped being a primary school in 1975 and reopened as a first school with 42 students enrolled as part of the Surrey Reorganization. The school was reopened as a primary school in 1995 as a result of the Surrey age of transfer reorganisation. From 10 in 1873 to 189 at the moment, St. Joseph's has seen a significant fluctuation in the number of students over the years. The two World Wars undoubtedly had an impact on the school: in 1914, Belgian refugees were welcomed, and in 1940, 78 Mitcham evacuees enrolled. The Servite Order of Nuns took over the running of St. Joseph's in 1887, and they did so until 1970, frequently in extremely challenging and claustrophobic conditions. St. Joseph's, which celebrated 140 years of Catholic education in 2013, is proud of the part it played in Dorking's educational history and still offers all the kids in its care a first-rate primary education.
