From the Sands School
From the recently closed Dartington Hall School, fourteen students and three instructors convened in a garden in the summer of 1987 to plan a new school.
The core of the Sands experience has maintained our initial level of student/teacher cooperation.
Some of the most fascinating and gifted people in the nation received their education at Dartington Hall School over its sixty-year existence.
The fundamental differences I saw as a new teacher at Dartington Hall School informed what we brought with us to the Sands experience: relationships between all ages based on trust and respect rather than some imposed artificial hierarchy; respect earned rather than expected; responsibility shared so that school is run by all of its members; space given for the development of the child as a social and creative being as well as an academic person; staff racial diversity; and staff racial diversity.
There is no preaching or evangelising about the education we offer because we have the intuition that there is always more to learn and that we might not always get it right.
Simply an effort to improve it, and as a result, each generation of students contributes to the school's continued existence.
25 years later, the school is still recognisable as the Sands that I was first involved in creating.
But in my opinion, it is now better, more timely, and owned more cooperatively than it was in 1987, with a more comprehensible structure and philosophy.
