From the Samuel Lucas Junior Mixed and Infant School
Samuel Lucas, an artist who lived from 1805 to 1870 and was the second son of William Lucas, a Quaker whose family had been yeomen and maltsters in Hitchin for more than 300 years, was honoured with the school's name. Samuel Lucas received his early education at the Society of Friends School in Bristol, where he also discovered a love of sketching and drawing that would last the rest of his life. Samuel Lucas made as many drawings and paintings as he could while he was an apprentice and worked for a corn merchant in Wapping, London. This went directly against his father's desires, who vehemently opposed any such activities outside of daily work and prayer. In 1834, Samuel Lucas moved back to Hitchin and continued to work hard in the family business while also finding time to paint. At the Royal Academy, many of his watercolour paintings of the surrounding countryside were on display. Samuel Lucas is renowned for his numerous, excellent pen-and-ink illustrations of folks from Hitchin and the surrounding area. Watercolors by Samuel Lucas are highly prized by collectors today because they represent excellent English painting of the era. When Samuel Lucas School was opened on September 3rd, 1974, it had 48 students. It was constructed as an infant school. On March 12, 1975, the Rev. Richard Lucas, one of the few remaining members of the Samuel Lucas family, officially opened the school. The location was intended to house both a primary school (key stage 1) and a junior school (key stage 2). Nevertheless, these intentions were abandoned, and Samuel Lucas became a junior mixed infant community primary school in 1978. This was done to make place for the Key Stage 2 class, which was expanding quickly.
