In 1791, the first Parish School was founded through subscription. The property had a house, a garden, and a classroom. From 1720 on, the schoolmaster was paid from the interest on funds provided by various benefactors. The cash from the cattle grazing in the nearby marshes benefitted the master as well. The headmaster in 1840 was Mr. James Ruff, and he had the benefit of a school built about 1832 by Paul Beilby Thompson of Escrick. The Church Hall was afterwards housed in this structure. Mr. William Hepworth served as the school's headmaster in 1892, and there were 185 students enrolled there, 18 of them were free scholars. 5 girls and 5 boys made up Mr. Hepworth's own family of 10, which he raised in the Old School House. The current school was inaugurated on February 2nd, 1931. The headteacher was Mr. J. W. Gibson. There were 154 kids listed, including kids from Riccall, Kelfield, and Escrick who were older than 13 years old. Three times—once in 1970, once in 1989, and once more in 1995—the school has been expanded. Nearly 250 students attended the school in the middle of the 1990s. Charlotte.
