From the Queen Mary's School
A girls' preparatory boarding school was founded in 1925 in the Duncombe Park mansion, close to Helmsley. After one year, the number of students rose from 23 to 59. In 1931 the School of Duncombe Park was renamed Queen Mary's School after the Headmistress, Miss Winifred Wright, and the pupils wrote to Queen Mary herself and received written permission from King George V and Queen Mary. The preparatory school added a secondary school in 1979, and the school relocated to the lovely Baldersby Park in 1985. We are overjoyed to be known as Queen Mary's. In our Great Hall, two great portraits—one of King George V and the other of Queen Mary—hang. The portraits are being loaned out really graciously by Buckingham Palace.
