The history of both Newington Green Primary School and the neighbourhood as a whole is fascinating. In the course of American history, Newington Green has played a significant role. The village that changed the world is in this book. The development of the neighbourhood and its illustrious intellectual and dissident people who influenced our history are described in Alex Allardyce's book A History of Newington Green, London N16. The brochure at the bottom of this page contains further information about the history of the region. The growth of the neighbourhood has been heavily influenced by education and schools. Since 1784, when the renowned feminist Mary Wollstonecraft founded a school for girls there with her sister Eliza, there has been a school on this location. The Matthias Road Boys School was established in 1884. We have the Headmaster's daily log book from this period, in which he keeps track of all the noteworthy daily occurrences at the school. When school inspectors visited the school in 1885, the headmaster noted their observations, writing that "animal physiology is taught to a high standard." We uncovered a large number of previously believed lost items from the school archive in 2010. Registers from 1939 are available, as is a list of personnel and students who served in Her Majesty's forces from 1914 to 1918. The fact that we also have photos and albums from around 1950 onwards is a great blessing. One of the most unexpected images depicts a teacher smoking while lecturing to a class around 1970. The school's reception area showcases our archive. We frequently receive visits, extra photos, and memories in the mail and through email. We would be delighted to hear from you if you were a former student or staff member. Download The History of Newington Green brochure for more details on the history of our school.
