The National School is given the annuity by the trustees of the Widmore Estate.
James Widmore left 10 per year as part of a codicil to his will in 1825 to help the needy buy clothing and bedding.
The National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church sponsored the construction of the first school on this site in 1837 by the Rev. Henry Woodcock.
Only 26 of the 155 children in the village between the ages of 6 and 13 are shown to have attended school in the 1851 census.
Hurstbourne Priors School closed in May 1969, and since then, students from there have attended Longparish School.
Financed primarily by the sponsors of John Ellicock's epic walk from the Needles to Cape Wrath, as well as by parent fundraising efforts and grants from the DfE and Diocese, a permanent addition to the school was constructed on the front in 1997 to house offices, a waiting area, a medical room, and a library.
A significant construction project was completed in 2004–2005, allowing for the replacement of the two "temporary" classrooms from the 1970s as well as the creation of a new kitchen, a new hall, and a permanent home for the Longparish playgroup.
The DfE and diocese capital funds, along with a significant and outstanding local fundraising effort, covered the project's cost of almost two million dollars.
