Our school, Copley Junior, has four Houses.
They bear the names of four great scientists who have received the Copley Medal: Hawking (Red House), Hodgkin (Green House), Einstein (Blue House), and Darwin (Yellow House).
The Copley Medal has a rich history, and numerous notable scientists have received it.
Because the Copley Medal was founded by a family, our school bears their name, and their crest still appears on our school uniform.
In Sprotbrough, the Copley family hailed from.
The Royal Society in London bestows the Copley Medal as a scientific honour for "exceptional contributions in research in any discipline of Science."
The medal is the oldest Royal Society award still given out each year.
Given to Stephen Grey for "his new Electrical Experiments" in 1731, it is the oldest extant scientific honour in the world.
Numerous eminent scientists, including 52 Nobel laureates, have received the Copley Medal.
Professor John Goodenough receives the Copley Medal for 2019 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to materials science, including the discovery of the rechargeable lithium battery, which is used in computers and smartphones around the world.
The Royal Society's President, Venki Ramakrishnan, said: "With his groundbreaking research on the characteristics of magnetism and his consistently improving work on batteries, which includes those powering the smartphone in your pocket, Professor Goodenough has left a rich legacy of contributions to materials science.
The Copley Medal, the Royal Society's top honour, is given in recognition of his accomplishments "The Copley Medal 2018 was given to Jeffrey I. Gordon, MD, in recognition of his research on the microbial populations in the human gut, which has changed how scientists think about the connection between microbes, health, and disease.
Sir Andrew Wiles KBE FRS received the 2017 Copley Medal in recognition of his proving of Fermat's Last Theorem.
Fermat continued by asserting that he had discovered a proof for the theorem, but that the margin of the book he was underlining was insufficient to hold it.
This 300-year-old enigma was solved by Sir Andrew Wikes.
But in addition to finding the answer to the Theorem's enduring mystery, he also opened up completely new mathematical avenues, which have been extremely useful to other researchers in the years since his discovery.
Sir Andrew Wikes stated, "I feel immensely honoured to receive this medal which has been presented to so many eminent scientists and mathematicians," in response to receiving the Copley Medal.
The Royal Society's Copley Medal, the oldest scientific honour in the world, was given to Dr. Richard Henderson FRS of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge in 2016.
He received the award for his work on imaging techniques that allowed researchers to comprehend the atom configurations of significant biomolecules.
In July 2015, Professor Peter Higgs joined the ranks of Charles Darwin, Humphry Davy and Albert Einstein by winning the world's oldest scientific prize, the Royal Society's Copley Medal, for his work on the theory of the Higgs boson, discovered at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012.
Commenting on his receipt of the Copley Medal, Professor Peter Higgs said: "It is an honour to be the recipient this year of the Copley Medal, the Royal Society's premier award.".
