From the Castle School
For students with special education needs who have received statements, Castle is a successful 7–19 special school.
The school is intended for students with moderate learning challenges, but the majority of students also have special needs, such as autism, speech and language impairments, and some behavioural problems.
The following facts are derived from an article that was published in the Walsall observer in 1959, the year the school was originally established.
The nearby brickworks that were formerly located on the site gave rise to the name of Castle School.
The first special school to open in Walsall was Castle School.
It began operations on September 7th, 1959, with 132 students.
It cost 53,000 to build and is located in Leamore.
Specialized teachers were employed, most of whom had prior experience working with children who had special needs.
Miss Aline Sabin served as the head instructor.
She had previously been a part of a Wolverhampton team that taught remedial classes.
The school had unique gear and equipment that weren't present in other schools.
The entry hall was intended to be utilised as a dining room, while the main hall served as a gymnasium.
Nine instructors worked at the school, and one of them was a part-time physical education specialist.
The school was founded by Mrs. Alice Taylor, who later was elected mayor of Walsall.
