From the Carden Nursery and Primary School
One of the earliest post-war schools to be finished was Carden Primary School, which was constructed in the late 1940s. The school's foundation stone was placed on October 22, 1947, by Alderman Morris, the Brighton mayor at the time, and the first students arrived on September 3, 1948. The school was built in a ground-breaking manner utilising pre-cast concrete on a slope that faces west naturally. For many years, the exterior's grey textured concrete was left unpainted. It is thought that the facility was initially intended to serve as a hospital in case of future conflicts because all of the classroom doors open out into patio areas. In September 1999, the original Carden Infants and Carden Junior schools amalgamated to form Carden Primary School. Pathe News has a great newsreel clip that details the school's early years.
