Ex Spinis Uvas, which translates to "Grapes From Thorns," is the school's slogan and a pun on the names of its founders.
The School relocated to Unity Street in 1767 after leaving its initial site at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, close to the bottom of the Christmas Steps, and then to Tyndalls Park in 1879.
The Preparatory School was founded in 1900, and in 1928 it moved into its own facility on Elton Road. However, during the night of November 24, 1940, incendiary bombs destroyed this structure along with most of Bristol.
Under the direction of Headmaster John Garrett, the Elton Road ruin was reconstructed as classrooms, and the Prep Hall, which had survived, became the Mackay Theatre.
The magnificent sports fields are complemented by the Don Pople Pavilion, which was finished in 2008. The Failand property also has a low ropes course and woodland for Forest School activities.
In 1979, BGS achieved independence after the direct grant system was abolished.
After allowing girls to enrol in the sixth form for the preceding two years, the school officially became coeducational in 1980.
With the opening of the Infant School in 2010, the School's growth has continued.
Over 1200 students, ages 418 and up, attend Bristol Grammar School today, a successful, contemporary, coeducational day school with a joyful and active community.
If you're interested in learning more about BGS's past, you may purchase Professor Keith Robbins' Pride of Place, a contemporary history of the institution, from the school for $15. (plus p&p).
Researching Old Bristolians who served in the First World War is also a current effort being supervised by Anne Bradley, our school's archivist.
