From the Bay House School
The illustrious past of Bay House School dates all the way back to 1838. Alexander Baring, who later became Lord Ashburton, built the house that now forms part of the school as his summer residence. The arch atop Constitution Hill was also created by the home's architect. At Bay House, later known as Ashburton House, a naval college was founded in 1870. The institution was attended by Prince Alfred Ernest, Duke of Edinburgh, the second son of Queen Victoria. While he was attending classes there, he stayed in Alverbank House. In 1892, Col. Francis Sloane-Stanley, a close friend of the Prince of Wales who was later to become King Edward VII took over the house. The 17 acres of parkland were given to the residents of the borough along with the house in 1943 when it was sold to Gosport Borough Council. As the Royal Engineers' base during the war, this was a significant time in the house's history. The residence was converted into Gosport County Grammar School after the war. In 1972, the institution adopted the name Bay House School. Since then, it has advanced substantially, bringing a sixth form to the Gosport region, among other things. We are extremely proud of the school's past and the advancements it has made lately.
