Barry Primary School would have a fascinating story to tell if walls could talk. Since it first opened as the Abington Avenue Temporary Board School in 1901, countless numbers of kids have entered through its doors. Initially, there were 71 students enrolled in the school. At the moment, we have over 400 students, making us one of the town's major primary schools. When the school changed its name to Barry Road Board School in 1902, there were really three departments: infants, boys, and girls. The doors from each department are still visible throughout the school. You can also notice a door marked "Babies" if you look closely. Barry Road Baths is where a huge number of Northampton residents first learned to swim, and they all have both good and bad memories of those early swimming experiences. In 1903, the pool first opened. Records indicate that in preparation, Brice's provided 200 pairs of bathing drawers that cost "3/11 halfpenny for a dozen" and Adnitts (now Debenhams on The Drapery) provided 400 bath towels. Again, for you younger people, additional study may be necessary to understand that. The staff and students had to shift to Vernon Terrace School when the school was taken over by military authorities in 1917 during the First World War. We have pictures of the pool, which is now being used as a hospital ward and has been boarded over.
