It's fascinating to notice that there were five Day Schools (probably Dame Schools in cottages) in the vicinity of our modern secondary school when the government first began to fund education in 1833. On an island of land east of The George Inn, the cob-built butcher shop, and the Parish Poor House of Milton, National Schools (for young children) were constructed by 1835. It stayed here up until just after World War I, when it relocated to huts near Gore Road's eastern end. In 1970, the Ashley Secondary School and Gore Secondary School in the neighbourhood were combined to form the Arnewood School. The process of merging the schools advanced quickly, and by November 1968, Mr. Gorvett, the headteacher, had gone to a meeting at the Winchester "Castle" to learn about the progress of the appointment talks for New Milton Comprehensive School. The name "Arnewood" was first proposed in January 1970; it was partially the result of a 1969 survey given to parents seeking choices for the name of the new school (sadly, the results of this no longer survive...). The results of the questionnaire didn't seem to be conclusive, so a committee of year heads met with Mr. Gorvett. Mr. Bert Stainer, the designate head of first year at the new school, offered the local name of "Arnewood" because it had a nice ring to it. The school changed its name to The Arnewood School over fifteen years later.
