Yeelo, a Somali term that means "Own it," continues to be the foundational idea and guiding principle of the charity's institutional beliefs and operations. It is a requirement for everyone. It involves fostering a cultural shift in which every community member, regardless of age or socioeconomic status, commits to playing the lead role in driving good change in both their own life and the lives of others.
Yeelo is a company that represents community solidarity and a determination to take ownership of positive change in the face of several obstacles. It is a group of parents, professionals, and students (graduates and undergraduates), the majority of whom are Somali, who come together and collaborate in order to make education and self-help the cornerstones of a fulfilling life while accepting unconditionally the potential and boundaries of human potential. Practically speaking, it seeks to play a significant part in institutionalising purposeful education by consistently pushing young people's and their families' perspectives on academic success, personal growth, and general development for a better overall result for all.
Since its inception in January 2009, the Yeelo March has developed naturally while overcoming numerous obstacles to get to where it is now, with over 350 students, 110 families, and about 35 volunteers and Educating Mentors all rowing in the same direction: Working together for a similar goal, getting great results, and doing so in a situation where resources appear to be scarce is undoubtedly attainable, normal, and honourable.
Yeelo is a way of life and a home where traditional family relationships and roles are explored, revived, and upheld in an effort to build intergenerational synergy and prepare the future with a 21st-century fit-for-purpose sense of personal and collective responsibility.
