Social Services opened a Day Center for individuals with learning difficulties in Newbury as a consequence of the plan made locally in a church hall by the scheme's founding members.
The initial office for Newbury Mencap was located on Northbrook Street, and in 1996, thanks to a Section 106 agreement with the local government, we relocated to our purpose-built Center at Enborne Gate.
In October 1996, Her Majesty the Queen declared the Center open.
A number of homes for individuals with learning impairments were founded thanks in part to the charity; the first of these, in Lambourn in 1986, was followed by five others, all of which were run by Royal Mencap.
Heffernan House, named after our Presidents Arthur and Jean Heffernan, was created when Greenham Common Trust refurbished a structure in St. Johns Road in 2010.
Our supported job skills service, Link Up, relocated from Greenham Common to Bone Lane in 2013 and adopted the moniker Slater Centre.
Due to Leisure Plus's relocation to the Slater Centre, where it has a dedicated area of its own, this move has significantly freed up space at the Mencap Centre.
In North Hampshire, just across the border, we are working on a horticulture project.
This offers therapeutic possibilities for persons with a variety of abilities and is funded by Greenham Common Trust.
