After World War II, the Italian people were left to pick up the pieces and reconstruct their lives.
The residents of Reggio Emilia, a tiny city in the Emilia Romagna region of Italy, began to rebuild their lives and their community. The first post-war school for young children was built in the village of Villa Cella, seven kilometres from Reggio Emilia, by local men and women of all ages using a small sum of money obtained from the sale of a tank, three trucks, and a few war horses, as well as donated land from a local farmer and construction materials from bombed-out buildings.
Local elementary school teacher Loris Malaguzzi was driven to provide a brighter future for the children and families in Reggio Emilia. Malaguzzi sought to learn more about this community-built preschool initiative after hearing about Villa Cella.
