From the St Oswald's Pre-School
There were church synods conducted in AD 782 and AD 789, and the Aycliffe Village church still contains Saxon artefacts.
When the Norman invaders decimated the area in 1069, the Saxon settlement of Aycliffe vanished overnight.
Relocated and reconstructed as gloomy rows of huts encircling a village green, Aycliffe and Middridge are now.
28 residents of Aycliffe and Middridge joined the 1569 insurrection, and 5 of them were killed for their involvement in it. They grew to be independent-minded and argumentative.
When the Open Fields in Middridge were split up into different farms in the seventeenth century, the procedure involved a lot of conflict and litigation!
The County Durham pit villages were frequently just a collection of slums.
The difficulties of substandard housing and unemployment were exacerbated after the mines closed.
But the government built an ordnance factory next to Aycliffe Village during the Second World War, and this served as the foundation for an industrial estate after the war.
A new town (with around 10,000 residents) was planned on the subpar farmland to the north so that the workforce could live there.
On June 28th, 1948, construction started.
The County Council wants residents of the former Category D (due to perish) pit settlements to relocate to Newton Aycliffe.
Beveridge selected Newton Aycliffe as the location to carry out his plan for a welfare state in which there would be no more filth, unemployment, or poverty.
In the master plan for the new community, managers and men would coexist in luxurious council homes in a classless society.
Even if much of Beveridge's vision has been lost, the township has overcome the "new town blues" and its residents have created a thriving, joyful neighbourhood.
