The Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary established St. John's School in 1897 as a boarding school for delicate children. In its long history of 'Special' education the school has helped boys with ophthalmic difficulties, cardiac illness, respiratory diseases and learning difficulties meeting each of these needs as they emerged up to 1970, when the school was closed for refurbishment. As a day school for boys and girls with moderate to severe learning challenges and additional language impairments, it reopened in January 1972. Children who may have social or emotional issues can benefit from the environment's special compassion and care. The school, which has charitable status, is approved as a Special School by the D.F.E.S. (1993 Education Act, Section 188) for 100 pupils ranging in age from 5 to 19 years. Children from L.E.As are eligible for places. Currently, the school is used by 10 L.E.As. St. John's is a Roman Catholic school, although it welcomes any kid whose educational requirements are believed to be best served by the setting it has to offer. More over half of the enrolled students come from nonreligious backgrounds. Despite the fact that we are a Roman Catholic school, we accept students of all religions.
