Children from Bishop Wilson Church of England Primary School are celebrating the start of a groundbreaking programme that will teach them important life skills, such as how to budget and save money.
According to reports, the school is the first in the North West to open its own general shop and bank as part of a comprehensive business sponsorship programme that aims to provide students real-world experience with money.
This month, the Bishop Wilson Bank and Mere Stores opened in a special ceremony organised by the school's board of governors with help from parents, students, instructors, training organisations, and corporate sponsors.
The idea involves creating the Mitre, a special form of school currency.
From Year R to Year 6, all students have been invited to open a bank account and save the Mitres they earn to purchase toys and school supplies from the school store.
The concept not only encourages kids to take charge of their finances, but it has also given students a taste of life in the real world by hiring them for positions such as bank manager, assistant bank manager, cashier, shop manager, assistant shop manager, and shop assistant.
The project's main goal, according to parent governor Syed Rashid, was to make Bishop Wilson Primary School well-known.
As a gold sponsor of the programme and contributor of $2,000, Merilyn Phillips, managing director of Merilyn Phillips Exquisite Interiors, said: "Having worked with other primary schools, this project appealed to us as it was reinforcing a unique reward system within the school which encourages the children to save money/tokens, as well as spend them."
Haines Watts Wirral, a project sponsor as well, said Pam Knight, practise services coordinator: "Haines Watts Wirral is thrilled to have the opportunity to assist the school campaign, Bishop Bank, and Mere Stores."
As part of a long-term goal to provide kids the skills they need to manage money in the future, the project is likely to inspire more initiatives across Merseyside and Cheshire.
Children benefit from being able to save money for better purchases.
