In a groundbreaking study, researchers discovered that babies that show interest in unexpected occurrences, like magic shows, grow into the most inquisitive toddlers.
According to Science Daily, the study contends that a pre-verbal baby's level of curiosity in novel components of the world remains constant over time and may serve as an indicator of their potential cognitive development.
The Johns Hopkins University Laboratory for Child Development's co-director, Lisa Feigenson, stated that a baby's interest in magic tricks seems to anticipate how interested they will be as preschoolers.
Prior to this investigation, nothing was known about the preverbal mind's curiosity. Feigenson and the paper's lead author, Jasmin Perez, had grown dissatisfied with the traditional experimental approaches used to research newborn cognition, in which babies are exposed to everyday items that behave in startling and unexpected ways.
Some infants would gaze intently at these things, while others would give them a fleeting glance, yawn, and move on. The disparities were thought to be caused by newborns being babies, or perhaps they were hungry, exhausted, or just irritable.
Feigenson and Perez evaluated 65 infants over a period of time and their responses to oddly behaving objects at 11 months old and again at 17 months old because they felt there was more to it.
According to Perez, we discovered that babies who gave magical items particularly lengthy looks at 11 months old were the same babies who gave them really long looks at 17 months old.
The newborns are now three years old, and the researchers are still observing them to observe how their interest changes as they get older.
