From the The Orchard Independent Special School
To give our students the tools, support, and direction they need to thrive in school and in life.' Orchard Independent School is a specialised facility that supports students with a wide range of needs.
We are a "Independent Special School" with competence in assisting students with Autism, ADHD, or more general Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs, according to Ofsted's Nov. 2018 report (SEMH).
It's common for students at The Orchard to have experienced traumatic educational experiences, and we take pleasure in our ability to successfully re-engage them in the classroom while gradually boosting confidence and placing a strong emphasis on positive growth.
In March 2018, Ofsted graded the school as "Good," and they conducted an additional material change inspection in November to acknowledge the work we undertake with students who have EHCPs (EHCP).
The road to adulthood is not without "bumps in the road," but we work one-on-one with each learner to manage emotions, behaviour, and confidence while developing tools to move forward.
Learner "A" transferred to our institution in 2016 after being dismissed from the Independent Special School where he had been enrolled.
He had been out of school for about a year and was quite hesitant to return.
Learner "A" was very frightened and apprehensive about returning to school because she was diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and other SEMH concerns.
Learner A was gradually assisted by the same staff member to transition into school on a part-time basis once he gained greater confidence in the relationship he had developed. This staff member also provided full support throughout the entire process. (During learner A's time at The Orchard, developing relationships with key staff members was a crucial part of gauging his progress and providing assurance that help was always available.
Learner A made the transition to higher education in September 2018 and was given a spot in a media course at Grimsby Institute.
Learner A was assisted by Orchard staff during his orientation, interview, enrollment, and first day of class.
Learner A completed his course in 2019 and has since started on a track that would hopefully lead to his goal of becoming a computer programmer.
