Schools should aggressively encourage children to respect others and uphold British values, particularly with regard to the protected qualities outlined in the 2010 Equality Act. Actively promoting implies that schools must be able to show what they are doing to uphold these ideals and that everyone in the school community is confronting those who hold opposing views. The 2021 Early Years Foundation Stage already implicitly incorporates the core British principles of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, respect for one another, and tolerance for people of different religions and views.
Separately, the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 mandates that early childhood educators give consideration to the need to stop people from becoming attracted to terrorism (the Prevent duty).
We urge kids to understand their place in the wider picture, to recognise that their opinions matter, to respect one another's opinions and values, and to talk about their feelings, such as whether they need help or not. When appropriate, we show democracy in action by having kids raise their hands during a group discussion to share their opinions.
We encourage children to make their own decisions and offer games that encourage cooperation, sharing, and taking turns. Children are given the chance to cultivate inquisitive minds in an environment that values them.
Rule of law: According to Personal Social and Emotional Development, knowing the rules is important.
Treat others with respect and tolerance, just as you would like to be treated.
