The building itself was the third to occupy the location when it was initially constructed in 1772.
Similar homes that were so near to London and Greenwich Palace were popular with businesspeople and courtiers alike, and many of them were rebuilt on a much grander scale. The original Lee Farmhouse was a modest farmhouse from the 17th century.
The Farmhouse at Lee Farm ended itself in this situation.
The property was taken over and given the name "The Manor House" in place of the ancient Manor House of Lee by Sir Francis Baring, a well-known banker and MP who would eventually possess the most of the land in the Parish of Lee.
The structure was hailed as a great success since it allowed the students to play a variety of sports on the grounds, including "Lawn Tennis, Cricket, and Football" (of course, this refers to rugby!).
Wolfram decided to relocate his school to Kensington in 1898, and until the Lee Board of Works were able to persuade London County Council to contribute to the establishment of a new public space and the maintenance of the Manor House itself, the fear of demolition and development posed a genuine threat.
The Board was interested in purchasing the home to serve as offices; the estate's overall cost was 9,600 at the time.
Lord Northbrook contributed to the property's valuation alone, leaving the Board to pay for the park and essentially giving the home to the general public as a gift.
Since the Lee Board of Works ceased to function in 1900, its plans were no longer applicable before the property was transferred, even though all of their assets were given to the newly constituted Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham, including the Manor House, which was still being transferred.
With the building being handed to the Libraries Committee in 1901, Lewisham, which already had a library service, planned to expand that service into Lee.
After substantial restorations, the Library was reopened to the public in 1902, and has remained so ever since.
