With more than 10,000 students studying on our lovely 600-acre estate in Staffordshire, with our neighbourhood NHS partners, and from all over the world, Keele University was founded in 1949 and has grown to become one of the largest campus institutions in the UK.
Keele is the gold standard for teaching, with some of the happiest students in the nation, and our research aims to better people's lives and tackle the most important problems in our area, the nation, and the world.
The University was first driven by the needs of the local community when it was founded in 1949 by Lord Lindsay, a former vice chancellor of Oxford University, in a nation still recuperating from World War II.
Keele was established with a pioneering spirit and a dedication to improving the world to fulfil the needs of its students.
Keele was the first new university to be established in the 20th century and it still upholds its original goal today.
The Vice-Chancellor serves as the university's chief academic and administrative officer and serves as the Senate's ex officio chair.
At Keele, sustainability permeates all we do, and as a result, we have pioneered numerous trials in green technology and smart energy.
We're pleased to be leading the field in sustainability, having hosted the first UK experiment of hydrogen blending in a gas network, testing innovative smart energy technologies, and generating our own renewable energy on campus.
Our efforts are appreciated all across the world, a reputation that was solidified in 2021 when we took home the Green Gown Award for Global Sustainability Institution of the Year.
Our influence is felt locally as well as globally, as our researchers and students gain from strong ties with nearby companies and NHS trusts.
More than 5,000 Keele-trained nurses are currently employed in front-line roles for the NHS, with many of those who study with us opting to stay local after earning their degrees.
Our support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) outside the healthcare sector is likewise unmatched, with 600 local businesses backed by Keele-led innovation programmes since 2017 and contributing 200 million annually to the local economy.
