Karmand Nursery

Bradford's unemployment rate started to grow dramatically in 1982 when the foundries, textile, and engineering industries started to see a collapse. The Management Committee started its modest work for the neighbourhood community, which was at the time a great undertaking, when the Local Authority provided a grant of $27,000 to the Karmand Association to purchase St. Clements Church Hall. The jobless, youth, and women in the community received access to literacy classes, vocational training, and skills development programmes. In order to help those who were impacted by the recession and unemployment, an advice service was provided. The Center was founded in a modest structure with the goals of serving the local community's needs in the areas of education, vocational training, and social requirements, regardless of colour, ethnicity, or creed (from the three local wards of Bradford Moor, Bowling, and Undercliffe). The Center has continued to grow in response to the demands as the community's needs have changed and grown throughout time. The multipurpose Sports/Community Hall was finished in 1992, and this helped to allow for a considerably greater range of indoor leisure activities for youngsters and to foster culture and tradition. The Elderly Day Care Unit Extension allowed us to begin offering a crucial service to our neighborhood's senior population in 1995. The National Lottery Charities Board funded the extension work to add more training/education rooms in early 1997 since the demands and needs of our users outgrew the capacity of the Center.
