The Alternative Provision (AP) academies offer mainstream students the chance to pursue a degree who are unable to attend mainstream classes because of medical or health requirements, as well as those who have been permanently excluded, are in danger of being permanently excluded, or on an intervention basis.
Students follow individual learning plans that are linked to the national curriculum at Key Stages 1, 2, and 3, while at Key Stages 4 and 5, students will follow individual learning plans that are linked to both academic credentials and/or a vocational path that may involve work experience.
The Community and Hospital Education Service (CHES) and Torlands Academy, two medical provision academies, are two places where children and young people with complex medical and/or mental health challenges who are unable to attend school full-time can receive an education.
In September 2020, Glendinning Academy opened its doors to serve the SEND needs of the children and teenagers in the southern part of the county.
Children aged 7 to 19 who struggle with social interaction and communication, including those who are autistic, can attend Glendinning Academy (key stage 2 to key stage 5).
Up to the eighth academic year, the school had 54 spaces available; during the course of the first three years, that number rose to 120.
The curriculum of Glendinning Academy lays a big emphasis on practical instruction and a supportive, individualised setting.
For students to access the curriculum and improve their social, emotional, and communication skills, the Academy places a strong emphasis on outdoor learning.
As we get ready to launch a new special school in South Somerset for pupils with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, we are working closely with Somerset County Council and the Department of Education.
Wave Multi Academy Trust frequently promotes uplifting, inclusive principles.
