From the School
The area was used as pasture ground until the 1870s.
The main school structure was constructed after the location for the New College boys' school was purchased in 1877.
Since Temple Grove Preparatory School took over the property in 1907, it has been referred to as Temple Grove.
Up until 1935, Temple Grove School operated there before moving to Heron's Ghyll, close to Uckfield.
Up until the start of World War II, the site was deserted.
The DEB's primary responsibilities included monitoring the standard of NHS dental care and accurately and promptly paying over 15,000 NHS dentists in England and Wales.
When it was at its busiest, the DEB (later known as the Dental Practice Board or DPB) employed up to 2,000 people at this location and other offices throughout the city to handle 35 million dental claim forms annually.
After being used for farming during the war, the playing field was reopened in 1957, and a cricket pavilion was constructed in the 1970s.
The number of employees steadily decreased as a result of increased computerization and modifications to dentists' payment procedures.
The DPB joined the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) in 2006, which is based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The remaining workers in Eastbourne relocated to new offices in the town centre in July 2012 as a result of further staff reductions brought on by increased collaboration with private sector partners and the advantages of combining functions like HR and finance.
