The Letters and Sounds programme is used to teach phonics to children throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Flash cards are sent home to help parents support their children at home, and phonics workshops are held to provide parents with information and suggestions for helping at home.
We put a lot of effort into building on the strong foundation of reading instruction from the EYFS in Key Stage One.
In Year One, Read Write Inc. books are utilised to connect with the letters and sounds that students are learning in the daily Letters and Sounds phonics lessons, giving students the chance to employ their new knowledge and skills right away by reading a book.
Our goal is for every child to start Year Two as a strong reader.
For Read, Write Inc synthetic phonics, where kids are taught in small groups of similar aptitude, we consequently keep grouping.
When kids have mastered the phonics standards set by the nation, they start taking English instruction more seriously.
This programme of instruction builds on the tempo and fervour required in phonics to continue producing excellent readers by nurturing a love of reading, strengthening comprehension abilities, and producing skilled writers.
Synthetic phonics: a daily lesson based on Read, Write, Inc. and the Letters and Sounds programme.
Resources Reading programmes are used throughout the school, with students progressing through the Key Stage One and Two programmes before becoming independent readers.
Study guides: Every day during the school, stories are read to the kids.
Every Friday morning, EYFS and KS1 students host a reading café where parents and other caregivers can join in and read aloud to their children or listen to stories.
By the end of the summer term, the reading den and reading shelters on both key stage yards will be operational.
Children who have read at least four times a week are entered into a raffle each half term.
From EYFS, KS1, Lower Key Stage 2, and Upper Key Stage 2, one winner is chosen, and they are then given the option to select a book from Amazon.
Beginning in Spring 2, we will identify the class that has the greatest proportion of students reading at least four times each week on a Friday.
