Children from low-income families who are currently known to be eligible for FSM and children who have been consistently cared for for more than six months are given additional school money known as the Pupil Premium.
The Pupil Premium, which is an additional source of funding for schools, is seen by the government as the most effective means of addressing the current, underlying disparities between students who qualify for free school meals (FSM) and their more privileged peers by ensuring that funds intended to combat disadvantage reach those students who need them the most.
