From the St Martins Centre Nursery
The original St. Martins Church, which had been around since its founding in 1933, was demolished to make way for St. Martins Centre. The depopulation of Byker and some of the lowest Indices of Multiple Deprivation in the nation, however, meant that St. Martins Church faced an uncertain future by the end of the 1990s (in the worst 10 percent ). This, together with a declining church membership, indicated that adjustments were required.
Following numerous community meetings, it was decided to reconstruct the church but also include a community centre and a locals-only nursery. As a result, the community as a whole received the official opening of the new building in 2006, which was more brighter and more contemporary. Today's church features a designated chapel room with a lovely stained glass window for private contemplation and meditation, as well as a fully operational nursery that provides top-notch childcare.
Our community centre, nursery, cafe, children's centre, and church are all located on the same property now and are available six days a week for community events.
With a sizable upper room with wooden flooring and a lift, the center's primary community room spaces are adaptable and can be changed to be either smaller or larger thanks to dividing walls, so they can suit anything from community meetings and groups up to larger fairs and events.
St. Martins Centre has expanded and offered even more services to the citizens of Byker and Walker during the recent economic downturn and instability. We look forward to the future with vigour and confidence.
