From the Shama Women's Centre
empowering women via a variety of activities to build their self-esteem, employable skills, health, and wellness in order to become more engaged economically, educationally, and socially.
The Shama Womens Center was founded 35 years ago by a group of local BAME women who joined together to offer local women assistance and activities that were inclusive of their cultures.
The initiative quickly gained momentum, and the unincorporated organisation was given backing by the Leicester City Council to offer a variety of services to the region's growingly diverse population.
The organisation was successfully registered as an incorporated charity in August 2000. (Reg no.1087995).
For the next several years, Shama Womens Centre continued to work alongside the local voluntary sector as a niche provider of culturally conducive support services, gaining high recognition through various accreditations.
We have assisted hundreds of women in gaining confidence, credentials, and employment via social, educational, and emotional assistance.
Many people have volunteered and served as ambassadors for the centre out of a desire to give back to the neighbourhood.
We are the only womens centre in the heart of Leicester, that provides a culturally conducive environment with multi-lingual staff and volunteers delivering a range of accreditations such as IT, ESOL, Mental Health Awareness, accredited level 2 business courses and more.
We have a purpose built industrial textiles training centre, helping hundreds of women train and gain employment or start their own business.
Shama Womens Centre wouldn't exist without the assistance and dedication of our wonderful employees and volunteers.
We are always looking for volunteers to support across a range of activities.
