I am all too aware of how challenging it is to locate a good nursery for a child. It is a significant yet difficult duty, and I opened my own nursery to address the issue after finding it difficult to find a decent but affordable nursery for my own child.
I established The Playhouse Day Nursery in Bearwood in 1987; it had 37 spots at the time.
I saw this as my ideal chance to take an exciting risk as the owner at the time had decided she also wanted a career shift and wanted to sell the business.
The next year, I took my next most profitable risk and acquired Edgbaston Park, my second daycare centre.
When Liz graduated from college, she approached me about joining what was now a family business. In 2004, Liz joined as the trainee manager.
She acquired her NVQ level 3 in Children's Care, Learning, and Development and quickly learned the nursery's organisational framework.
She developed a love for equity and diversity for children as she poured more and more thoughts into the changing situation of the daycare industry and sought a Masters degree in Early Childhood Studies in 2009.
Liz obtained Qualified Teacher Status and lectured to students interested in a future in the early years sector at a neighbouring college. She also taught Early Childhood Studies and Health and Social Care at a nearby secondary school and sixth form.
We are utilising the variety of knowledge and abilities that our team of 25 practitioners throughout the settings have to offer as we go forward to become a CACHE approved training centre offering Early Childhood certifications at various levels.
In 2016, Sandwell Council extended a five-year offer to me for another nursery.
